Greece: Getting to and Through The Acropolis

So we are in Greece, which I was the most excited about, but finding our hotel (an hour outside the city) turned out to be miserable as it always is. So when we got in we were excited to get to sleep! Greece doesn't have to much to see so Brent and I decided to take this time to relax before we hit up Rome for another crazy two day sprint!

So we decided to make it a week of no alarm clock (good idea since we don't have one!) by the time we got up and got going and found the acropolis (I say found because the metro was shut down right where we needed to be so we had to reroute a couple times!)

Okay now on to the fun stuff. We found the Acropolis, which is the most famous hill of ancient Greek ruins including the Parthenon. We thought the tickets were 18 Euros each but were happily surprised that they were only 12 Euros and that we had four days to use our passes to the 7 different Archeological sites!

Before we headed up to the Acropolis we found these fun ruins

Another fun remain. These were from about 300 B.C. I think... ya I guess that is pretty old!

This is the Theater of Dionysus. It was amazing that people cared this much about the arts this early on.

This is part of the stage. The carvings were remarkably well preserved!

This is some ruins in the acropolis that have been restored and now you can go to actual concerts there. The seating is all new but the wall behind it are the ruins. How cool would it be to perform somewhere that has been used for over 2000 years? Okay, I thought it would be cool!

Once we finally made it to the top we got our first good look of the Parthenon. This was awesome! It was HUGE! Brent and I tried to figure out how they built it, and to be honest we didn't get a good answer. All the plaques that we found are about the restorations of the monuments. All of the restorations started around 1818 A.D. Barely 40 years after the U.S. became independent, people were working on preserving these buildings. That just struck me as odd since they really didn't have strong tools or understanding of preservation compared to now. I guess in 100 years people will say the same thing!

Gorgeous picture of the Parthenon.

This was the worst part of it all. This is a rock, they were EVERYWHERE! Not typically a problem but these rocks are so worn down and slick that even with my tennis shoes on I slipped more than once. I never hit the ground but I had some close calls!
This is a little Kitty Cat that we found at the top of the Acropolis! All the way up at the top and she is just chillin... man I miss my cat... I hope she is okay because she makes me REALLY REALLY home sick!

This is from a view point at the top of the Acropolis. Everyone was so good about taking pictures for everyone else and then trading! The woman who took this picture got a cute smile on her face and then asked if it was our Honeymoon! We just laughed and said no but decided we would start saying yes from now on! Three years late isn't too bad!

The Acropolis is more than just the Parthenon though! This is Brent in front of The Erechtheion, which is a temple on top of the acropolis dedicated to Zues, Ares, and Athena! This is the back side.
Here is the front side of it. This is the one with the least amount of construction being done right now!

Here is us on the way out of the entrance, which is a whole structure to itself. You walk through 8 pillars that are around about 30 feet tall and crumbling all around you!
This was a great start to the day! Most people said the walk up to the top was the worst part but even that was pretty bearable, even though walking isn't our favorite thing anymore!

Wow..it looks so cool. It's official, I am thoroughly jealous. I'm in between loads of laundry and cleaning the bathrooms and you're exploring the Acropolis.

Brent looks super happy to be taking all these pictures. I honestly couldn't be more jealous. What a fun experience you two are having on your honeymoon.
